Electric Power System Communication Facilities
Communication As Part of an Electric Power System
The nervous system for stable, efficient supply of electricity
The communication network of an electric power system has the important role of conveying information for ensuring a stable supply of electricity. This information is used to adjust output from power stations, and to prevent power outages from spreading to wider areas when they occur.
We have installed our own communication network for the TEPCO power system. Among the main facilities are microwave wireless communication systems using extremely short wavelengths, and an optical fiber communication network, sending information over laser beams. In addition, optical ground wire (OPGW, cable containing optical fiber) is used on the overhead ground wire of transmission routes for protection from lightning.
