Power Quality Improvement Project in Laos that entails Upgrading Grid Code and Strengthening Enforcement Systems
In Laos, hydroelectricity is the main source of power production, and the country exports power to adjacent nations (Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia), but export volume is limited due to the substandard planning and operation of power grids thereby making it difficult to further increase power exports in conjunction with supply and demand conditions both in Laos and neighboring countries. Since February 2021, TEPCO HD, TEPCO PG, Tokyo Electric Power Services and Nippon Koei have been leveraging technologies for grid planning and operation that they have cultivated in Japan’s electricity industry and also through overseas consulting to establish a Grid Code that will enable players in Laos’s power industry, such as the Ministry of Energy and Mining, and Électricité du Laos (EDL), to suitably plan and operate power grids, while also contributing to the realization of an autonomous and stable wide-area linkage system in Laos.

Lumphini Underground Substation Project in Thailand
Metropolitan Electricity Authority (“MEA”) plans to construct a new underground substation in coincidence with landscape projects to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Lumphini Park in 2025. Constructing the underground substation below the park is necessary to ensure safety and preserve the surrounding environment. TEPCO PG was awarded this project because of its 40+ years of experience with the design, construction, operation and maintenance of underground substations in Japan and overseas, and its work on the “Preliminary Feasibility Study for Robust and Compact Underground Substations in Bangkok” which was sponsored by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
During this project, TEPCO PG will propose basic underground substation designs that take into account local safety and the surrounding environment, and review equipment specifications and layout drawings for the underground substation. Through this work, TEPCO PG will help MEA realize its plan to construct an underground substation in a public place.
