At Units 1~3, the fuel and the metal cladding tube that covers the fuel melted and then solidified turning to fuel debris. Preparations are currently underway to retrieve this fuel debris.
At Unit 1, remotely operated devices have been used to conduct three internal investigations of the containment vessel to date. We are currently making preparations for the next investigation and are constructing an access route through which to insert robots.
At Unit 2, remotely operated devices have been used to conduct six internal investigations of the containment vessel to date, and we confirmed that sediments at the bottom of the containment vessel can be grasped and moved. In light of the results from investigations implemented to date, we have decided to attempt to retrieve fuel debris from Unit 2 first, and are in the process of making preparations for retrieval, such as constructing an access route and manufacturing a robotic arm to be used for fuel debris retrieval.
At Unit 3, remotely operated devices have been used to conduct two internal investigations of the containment vessel to date. We are currently deliberating methods to retrieve fuel debris based on the information gained from these investigations such as video footage.
