Things you should know more about decommissioning
Question

How is "fuel debris" retrieved?

  • Fuel debris retrieval

Answer

The knowledge we have gained about the conditions inside the containment vessels and the conditions of fuel debris is limited, and the retrieval of fuel debris at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station is an unprecedented and difficult challenge never attempted anywhere in the world. Therefore, we have decided to remove some fuel on a trial basis based upon the knowledge and experience we have gradually gained, after which we will enlarge the scope of retrieval. We are also implementing internal investigations and steadily moving forward with other initiatives such as the development of devices to grasp and cut the fuel debris. Going forward we will take a step-by-step approach to fuel debris retrieval while remaining flexible and considering field conditions.
