Mar 26, 2019

Tokyo Electric Power Services Co., Ltd.
TEPCO Power Grid, Inc.

Yesterday, during a contract signing ceremony at the headquarters of Dhaka Power Distribution Company Limited, Tokyo Electric Power Services Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Koto-ku, Tokyo; President/CEO: Shotaro Ookawara (hereinafter referred to as, “TEPSCO”)) and TEPCO Power Grid, Inc. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President/CEO: Yoshinori Kaneko, (hereinafter referred to as, “TEPCO PG”)) agreed to enter into a consulting agreement with Dhaka Power Distribution Company Limited, (Headquarters: Dhaka; Managing Director Engineer. Bikash Dewan (hereinafter referred to as, “DPDC”)), a power distribution company in Bangladesh, pertaining to an underground substation construction project.

This project is eligible for an ODA yen loan※1 from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). In a previous press release from TEPCO PG dated February 21, 2019, TEPCO PG and TEPSCO already announced that an engineering services contract pertaining to another underground substation project in the Gulshan area had been signed with Dhaka Electric Supply Company (DESCO). Today’s release pertains to engineering services for the underground substation in the Kawranbazar area.

Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, has an extremely high population density and last year electricity consumption rapidly increased. It is expected that the construction of the country’s first underground substation will enable a stable supply of electricity and improvements in power demand conditions thereby contributing to promoting economic growth. DPDC plans to construct a commercial building above the underground substation, so it will be expected that gas-insulated transformers, a technology unique to Japan, will be applied to make the substation facility fireproof.

TEPSCO began providing engineering support overseas in 1963 for a thermal power station in India and currently provides consulting services to more than 65 countries. However, this project will mark the first time that TEPSCO will be the lead company providing engineering services for an underground substation construction project.

TEPCO PG deems the expansion of overseas projects as one of the main pillars of its growth strategy. By leveraging skills cultivated through our domestic power transmission and distribution projects, such as facility planning, construction, and operation know-how, etc., technology that contributes to the introduction and promotion of renewable energy sources, and the knowledge gained through the development of new services that utilize energy data, TEPCO PG hopes to further expand its reach overseas.

TEPSCO predicts that Bangladesh will be one of the main countries to which it will expand its overseas business through Official Development Assistance (ODA), etc. Therefore, in order to strengthen sales and support functions to Bangladesh, TEPSCO established a branch office in Bangladesh (General Manager: Naohiro Maeda) in October of last year.

By applying our technical prowess and know-how, we believe we can contribute to providing high quality and highly reliable power to the capital city Dhaka, which has one of the densest populations in the world.
