TEPCO Power Grid, Inc. Enters Consulting Agreement Pertaining to the Construction of a Underground Substation in Dhaka, Bangladesh ~TEPCO Power Grid, Inc. provides ES※1 overseas for the first time~

Feb 21, 2019

TEPCO Power Grid, Inc.
Tokyo Electric Power Services Co., Ltd.

Yesterday during a contract signing ceremony at the headquarters of Dhaka Electric Supply Company Limited, TEPCO power grid, Inc. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President/CEO: Yoshinori Kaneko, (hereinafter referred to as, “TEPCO PG”)) and Tokyo Electric Power Services Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Koto-ku, Tokyo; President/CEO: Shotaro Ookawara (hereinafter referred to as, “TEPSCO”)) agreed to enter into a consulting agreement pertaining to a underground substation construction project with Dhaka Electric Supply Company Limited (Headquarters: Dhaka; Chairman: Md. Mahbud-ul-Alam (hereinafter referred to as, “DESCO”)), a power distribution company in Bangladesh.

This is a project subject to an ODA yen loan※2 from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, has an extremely high population density and last year electricity consumption rapidly increased. It is expected that the construction of the country’s first underground substation will enable the stable supply of electricity and improvements in power demand conditions thereby contributing to promoting economic growth. DESCO plans to construct a commercial building above the underground substation, so it has been decided that gas-insulated transformers, a technology unique to Japan, will be applied to make the substation facility fireproof.

This project marks the first time that TEPCO PG will be providing consulting services, including supervision over bidding and construction, pertaining to an overseas construction project. For over 40 years, TEPCO PG has cultivated expertise in the design, construction, maintenance and operation of underground substations and has extensive knowledge gained through leveraging subterranean spaces, such as areas under buildings and roads, etc. under Tokyo, one of the world’s largest cities, to develop Tokyo’s power network systematically and efficiently. By applying this technical prowess and know-how, we believe we can contribute to providing a high quality and highly reliable power supply to the capital city Dhaka, which has one of the densest populations in the world.

To aid with this project, TEPCO PG will be dispatching engineers that have a plethora of experience with the design and construction of core system power facilities, and TEPSCO will be dispatching engineers with vast knowledge and experience pertaining to the provision of engineering services both within and outside of Japan.

TEPCO PG and TEPSCO deem the expansion of overseas projects as one of the main pillars of our growth strategy. By leveraging skills cultivated through our domestic power transmission and distribution projects, such as facility planning, construction, and operation know-how, etc., technology that contributes to the introduction and promotion of renewable energy sources, and the knowledge gained through the development of new services that utilize energy data, we hope to further expand our reach overseas.

※2: Long-term, low interest loans provided by the Japanese government to the governments of developing nations via the Japan International Cooperation Agency in order to develop infrastructure.
