Project for Rehabilitation of Baluchaung No. 2 Hydropower Plant in Myanmar

Project overview

The Baluchaung No. 2 Hydropower Plant was constructed in Kayah State, in the Republic of the Union of Myanmar in 1960 as part of post-war compensation provided by Japan based on an agreement signed in 1954. The output of the six water-wheel generators at the plant totals 168,000 kW. Even over half a century later, this vital power plant still provides approximately 10% of Myanmar's total power output. Rehabilitation work is currently underway to repair the outdated equipment and ensure the safe and stable operation of the site into the future. These upgrades are due for completion in 2016.
TEPCO entered into a joint venture with Nippon Koei Co., Ltd. participating in the restoration planning project (as a grant aid cooperative activity) as a consultant. TEPCO supplied equipment from Japanese manufacturers, and provided know-how on power plant operation to employees at the plant through construction management and engineering guidance.
