Jul 24, 2019
FUKUSHIMA, Japan — TEPCO announced on July 24 that it has released a narrated video of how nuclear fuel is being removed from the Unit 3 spent fuel pool at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.
The work, which began on April 15, is the world’s first undertaking to remove fuel from a reactor with a melted core. On July 4, TEPCO began the second stage of fuel removal and plans to complete the work on Unit 3 within the fiscal year beginning next April (FY2020). The video shows actual work being performed as well as explains preparatory steps undertaken prior to starting the work and details of the fuel-removal process.
Going forward, TEPCO will continue to disseminate timely and appropriate information to keep stakeholders informed about the company’s ongoing efforts to decommission the power station smoothly over the long term.
