TEPCO issues latest quarterly report on implementation of its nuclear safety reform plan

TOKYO, August 10 — During the first quarter of fiscal 2018 ending in June 2018, TEPCO highlighted its determination to move forward with the examination of detailed plans for the decommissioning of all reactors, and creation of a management model in the Nuclear Power & Plant Siting Division.

The statement on the examination of detailed plans for the decommissioning of all reactors was made based on the recognition that any continued lack of clarity with regard to the future of Fukushima Daini would only hinder recovery efforts in Fukushima. As the final decision on these matters must be made in consideration of the feelings of the local community, explanations will be given to stakeholders and decisions made after securing their understanding and cooperation.

TEPCO will additionally move forward with creating business plans based upon the management model created in 2017 and other activities aimed at promoting excellence. Furthermore, in July 2018 TEPCO joined the Atomic Energy Association (ATENA), which was created to enable operators, manufacturers and existing organizations to cooperate and take voluntary steps to contribute to safety improvements not only within their own organizations, but across the entire nuclear power industry. This is in addition to our participation in the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) and the Japan Nuclear Safety Institute (JANSI). We will continue to proactively participate in other external initiatives that aim to improve nuclear safety.

The report also covers developments that took place at Fukushima Daiichi, Kashiwazaki-Kariwa NPS, and throughout the company’s nuclear division. These included:

・Opening in the west side of the Unit 2 reactor building at Fukushima Daiichi NPS

・Completion of installation of the fuel handling machine, crane and all eight sections of the Unit 3 domed roof at Fukushima Daiichi NPS

・Start of trial operation of the fuel handling machine at Fukushima Daiichi NPS

・Creation of a fire break approximately 20m wide and 1.6km long at Kashiwazaki-Kariwa NPS

・Release of the training assessment results for each power station for FY2017

・Introduction of a self-assessment process

・Distribution of “Hairomichi”

・Training on the new regulatory requirements
