Press Release
Founding of TOUSOU MIRAI MANUFACTURING, INC for the purpose of manufacturing decommissioning-related products in the Hamadori region of Fukushima Prefecture

October 20, 2022

Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc.
Hitachi Zosen Corporation

In April of this year, Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Tomoaki Kobayakawa; hereinafter referred to as, "TEPCO") and Hitachi Zosen Corporation (Headquarters: Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture; President and CEO: Sadao Mino; hereinafter referred to as, "Hitachi Zosen") agreed to establish by October of this year a consortium to build a factory for manufacturing various core products required for decommissioning, such as spent fuel casks and debris storage containers.

(Announced on April 27, 2022)

Thereafter, both companies made preparations for the establishment of the company which was founded today as "TOUSOU MIRAI MANUFACTURING, INC" (hereinafter referred to as, "Tousou Mirai Manufacturing")

In order to "balance recovery with decommissioning," TEPCO is endeavoring to concentrate decommissioning industries in the Hamadori region of Fukushima Prefecture, such as by aiming to have decommissioning core technology/products, which have conventionally been ordered from Tokyo or overseas, developed/manufactured in the Hamadori region in the future, thereby becoming a mid/long-term foundation for the local economy.
At the same time, Hitachi Zosen, which was the first Japanese manufacturer to produce transportation casks for spent fuel in 1978, has a plethora of experience in delivering transport/storage casks. The company also has technical prowess and know-how pertaining to the transport and storage of spent fuel both in Japan and overseas. For example, its subsidiary, NAC International Inc., engages in the design and transport of transportation/storage containers for spent fuel and highly radioactive waste in the United States as well as consulting for such matters.

Tousou Mirai Manufacturing will leverage the knowledge of both companies and construct a decommissioning product manufacturing facility in Hamadori as part of efforts to concentrate decommissioning industry in the region, with the hopes of commencing operation during FY2025. Along with manufacturing spent fuel casks, this factory will contribute to safe and steady progress with decommissioning by manufacturing fuel debris storage casks in the future. Furthermore, by producing high function products, which have until now been manufactured outside of the prefecture, in the Hamadori region, the company will contribute to recovery in Fukushima.

Both TEPCO and Hitachi Zosen have contributed to society by building infrastructure that supports our daily lives, and as we head into the future, they will use Tousou Mirai Manufacturing to work together as a user and a vendor to make the manufacturing process more efficient as well as work closely with local companies in regards to the manufacturing of decommissioning products to contribute to the Hamadori economy, employment, and human resource cultivation.
