Comments in Response to the Judgements from the Supreme Court

I would like to deeply apologize for the great burden and inconvenience that the accidents at the TEPCO Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station and TEPCO Fukushima Daini Nuclear Power Station have placed on the people of Fukushima, and society as a whole.

Today, the Supreme Court handed down its judgement on the lawsuit brought against the Japanese government for the TEPCO accident. This marks the conclusion of all seven lawsuits that were brought in front of the Supreme Court, including lawsuits for which judgements have already been handed down to TEPCO by the high courts.

The scale and depth of the impact that this accident, which TEPCO allowed to happen, has had on the residents of the region is immeasurable. Everyone at TEPCO has been reminded of the responsibility we must take for these accidents, and I would like to take this opportunity to deeply apologize to the plaintiffs.

TEPCO deeply regrets that it allowed these accidents to happen. We have performed detailed analyses of the root causes and underlying factors of these accidents, and are engaged in initiatives that seek to leverage the regrets and lessons learned from the accident for all company activities so as to never allow an accident such as this to happen again.

Fulfilling our responsibilities to Fukushima is TEPCO's most important mission. While keeping in mind the fact that TEPCO has only been allowed to remain in operation in order to fulfill those responsibilities, we will continue to think about what we can do for Fukushima, and under my leadership TEPCO shall do its utmost to balance recovery with decommissioning, and follow through with compensation.
