Release of Results from International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Review of Safety Related Aspects of the Handling of ALPS Treated Water

May 2, 2022

Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc.

On April 29, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) publicly released its report on the IAEA review of safety related aspects of the handling of water treated with multi-nuclide removal equipment (ALPS treated water) at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station that was conducted during February 14-18 of this year.

The released report contains the findings of the IAEA review of the nature of ALPS treated water, the safety of the discharge process, and the radiological impact on people and the environment, which was conducted in accordance with international safety standards and based on the application submitted to the Nuclear Regulation Authority in December of last year to amend the implementation plan, and also the contents of the radiological impact assessment of the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea that was publicly released in November of last year.

The report states that in regards to the safety of the related facilities, the IAEA has found that, "…TEPCO successfully incorporated prevention measures in the design of the facility as well as in the associated operating procedures." And, in regards to the radiological impact assessment, "…Task Force acknowledged the comprehensive and detailed assessment that was undertaken in the conduct of the REIA," adding that, "…the doses to the assumed representative person are expected to be very low and significantly below the dose constraint set by the regulatory body (NRA)."

TEPCO have appropriately reflected the recommendations received from the IAEA through this review in the revised implementation plan submitted to the Nuclear Regulatory Agency on April 28, and revisions to the radiological impact assessment.

TEPCO will continue to make absolutely sure that it guarantees safety when handling ALPS treated water by subjecting its initiatives to IAEA reviews that compare them to international safety standards, while providing information to parties both in Japan and overseas in a highly transparent manner.

*The IAEA review was conducted by a task force comprised of experts from Argentina, Australia, Canada, China, France, Korea, Marshall Islands, Russia, United States, UK, and Vietnam, as well as IAEA employees.
