On October 2, Minister of the Environment Shinjiro Koizumi visited the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.

During his visit, Minister Koizumi was shown the tanks where contaminated water that has been treated is being stored and was given a tour of the Unit 3 reactor building. Minister Koizumi was also given a close look at decommissioning work from high ground on the west side of Units 1~4 where measures to reduce radiation levels have been implemented.

After the tour, Minister Koizumi commented, “I’m deeply grateful and honored to have the opportunity to meet many of the people engaged in this process. The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station is, in a sense, the origin of my position as Minister of State for Nuclear Emergency Preparedness and [visiting the station] has strengthened my conviction to never forget the lessons we have learned. What I have seen with my own eyes and felt will nourish my efforts to ensure that Fukushima recovers. And, I believe that it is my duty, and the duty of my generation, to ensure that the decommissioning process continues smoothly during our lifetime, and to pass down this responsibility to the next generation.”

TEPCO HD will continue to move steadily and safely forward with the long-term decommissioning process with the understanding and cooperation of society.
