(Comment) Revision of the Mid- and Long-Term Roadmap towards Decommissioning of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station Units 1-4

I would like to begin by offering our sincerest apologies for the great inconvenience that the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident continues to cause residents of the local community and society as a whole, even today, more than eight years and nine months later

A decision to revise the “Mid- and Long-Term Roadmap towards Decommissioning of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station Units 1-4” was taken today at the fourth meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Council for Contaminated Water and Decommissioning Issues.

With regard to the decommissioning and other work underway at Fukushima Daiichi, under the guidance of the government and other stakeholders we have continued our efforts to reduce risks by ensuring that the plant remains stable, implementing multilayered contaminated water countermeasures, and improving the work environment.

The return of people to the local area is progressing steadily, as are reconstruction efforts. To support reconstruction and achieve decommissioning, we will continue with efforts to reduce risks, always keeping safety as our number-one priority.

Based on the revised Mid- and Long-Term Roadmap, we will formulate specific plans and responsibly ensure the safe and steady implementation of decommissioning.

Decommissioning will be a long-term effort. Through this work, we aim to build more cooperative relationships with local companies, including through initiatives to train and support our personnel for this purpose.

In addition, we will strive to win people’s trust and secure their understanding of our decommissioning efforts, as well as continue our dialogue with local residents, always listening to their opinions and taking whatever measures are necessary to safeguard the area’s reputation.
