Fukushima Daiichi NPS Prompt Report 2016

Pending a thorough review of the detailed self-assessment, the company has already begun implementing improvements that the assessment identified

TOKYO, November 2-A wide variety of safety improvements, some prompted by a recently completed comprehensive self-assessment, are reported in TEPCO Holdings' most recent quarterly report on progress in the implementation of its Nuclear Safety Reform Plan.

The improvements include commencement of a Management Model Project this past July, a project to benchmark safety practices against global leaders, and refinements to key performance indicators.

They also include reconstruction of the education and training programs at the Nuclear Human Resource Development Center. These improvements are based on benchmarking against overseas nuclear operators. The effort also includes increasing the number of workers with certification, and enhancing basic engineering training for new employees.

As is customary in the quarterly reports, progress at each of TEPCO Holdings' three nuclear power stations is detailed. Highlights include:

-At Fukushima Daiichi:
Progress toward decommissioning of Unit 1, specifically the removal of its wall panels as a preliminary step toward removal of fuel from the unit's spent fuel pool during FY2020.
Shortening of the length of the cooling water circulation system with a newly installed desalination facility.
Freezing on the seaside of the "ice wall" (landside impermeable wall) confirmed and the mountainside is still in progress with efforts to enable further freezing.
Opening of the new administration building, enabling the transfer of contractors to the existing building that had been temporarily used by TEPCO Holdings' employees.
Major progress in the reduction of heat stroke during the summer months through more effective work scheduling, greater use of mobile water dispensers, and other approaches.

-At Fukushima Daini:
Efforts to enhance awareness and confirmation of procedures toward nuclear security after a problem with false intruder alarms and the inappropriate disabling of the alarm system.

-At Kashiwazaki-Kariwa:
Installation of additional shielding material on the external wall of the anti-seismic building.
Inspection conducted by the Nuclear Regulation Authority for Units 6 and 7.
Installation of pH control equipment in containment vessels to capture iodine in the event of a venting incident.

Many of the foregoing developments have been reported to the public by TEPCO Holdings during the course of the quarter, which ran from July through September 2016. TEPCO Holdings' fiscal year begins on April 1.
