Press Release (Nov 22, 2017)International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Operational Safety Assessment on the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Station

NIIGATA, November 9, 2017-TEPCO is implementing various measures to improve the safety of the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa (KK) Nuclear Power Station, reflecting on the lessons learned from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear accident.

As part of these endeavors, KK's Units 6 and 7 underwent an operational safety assessment review conducted by the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) Operational Safety Assessment Review Team (OSART) from June 29 through July 13, 2015, in which 15 areas for improvement were identified in a report submitted on December 10th of the same year.

The progress of improvement on those 15 areas was examined during the follow-up review session conducted by the IAEA from July 31 through August 4, 2017, and the OSART report was submitted on November 14. The report shows that 8 of the areas have been resolved and the remaining 7 were judged to have made satisfactory progress. It concludes that the manager of the power station has made efforts to improve safety in operating the station.

TEPCO will aim for further improvement by leveraging the results of this review based on IAEA standards and global knowledge, to earn the trust and confidence of local residents.
