Fukushima Daiichi NPS Prompt Report 2015

Fukushima Daiichi NPS Prompt Report (Sep 04, 2015)Recent topics:IAEA ISSUES DETAILED, COMPREHENSIVE REPORT ON MARCH 2011 ACCIDENT AT FUKUSHIMA DAIICHI

TEPCO pledges to seriously consider the report's guidance. The experiences and lessons learned will improve nuclear safety at Kashiwazaki Kariwa and throughout the company.

The final report on the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station accident was released by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on August 31, 2015.
This is a comprehensive report from an international authority in the nuclear energy field, and the advice and suggestions will be taken under serious consideration.
We realize that it is very important that to have such an authority summarize the accident into a report, and from that standpoint, share the experiences and lessons learned with the international community.

Findings:
-A major factor that contributed to the accident was the widespread assumption in Japan that its nuclear power plants were so safe that a severe accident was simply unthinkable.
-Some important sections in the rules and regulations at the time of the accident, as well as policies and procedures did not follow international conventions, etc.

TEPCO, dealing with the points made in the report, in light of the experiences and lessons learnt from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station accident and based on the Nuclear Safety Reform Plan completed in March 2013, is undertaking safety strategies for both hardware and software. The lack of Safety Awareness, Technical Skills, and Communication Skills were the causes of the accident and there has been marked improvement in these areas. This will contribute to further accelerate the recovery process.

Management will take the lead and commit to the restructuring of safe nuclear energy as "a nuclear operator that continuously improves safety to unparalleled levels by enhancing safety levels on a daily basis while always keeping the Fukushima Nuclear Accident in mind."

The Nuclear Reform Monitoring Committee (NRMC) comprised of external experts reviews our efforts regularly. In addition, a review was conducted at Kashiwazaki Kariwa Nuclear Power Station in July 2015 and the IAEA Operational Safety Review Team (OSART) provided advice and assistance. The level and extent of the nuclear power safety culture as well as the organizational operations and management were recognized by the team leader for aiming to be the world's best.

TEPCO will continue to improve nuclear power safety through the experiences and lessons learned from the Fukushima Nuclear Power Station accident, and we are committed to transparency in explaining our safety strategies and activities to domestic and international audiences alike.
