Press Releases 2015

Press Release (Mar 30, 2015)Appointment of John Crofts in the position of Managing Executive Officer and reorganization of Nuclear Safety Oversight Office

We would like to announce that Dr. John Crofts, Head of Nuclear Safety Oversight Office, is today appointed as Managing Executive Officer in charge of Nuclear Safety and Head of the Nuclear Safety Oversight Office. In addition, Nuclear Safety Oversight Office, which currently reports into the board of directors, has become an organization directly reporting to the president as of April 1, 2015.

Dr. John Crofts has been offering firm and effective advice to TEPCO's board members based on his experience and achievements as Director of Assurance Covering Safety of the UK Atomic Energy Authority. He will continue to support and assist us as Managing Executive Officer exclusively in charge of the improvement of nuclear safety management for all nuclear power plants. It is also noteworthy that he will be the first non-Japanese to be appointed to a position of executive officer at a Japanese utility. Crofts is also expected to be appointed as Chief Nuclear Safety Officer ("CNSO") once necessary arrangements through concerned parties are settled.

"Nuclear Safety Oversight Office" has, ever since its establishment in May 2013, independently supervised the approaches to nuclear safety from an executive function, advising and reporting the status to the Board of Directors. In the new structure, the office will continue to deal with nuclear safety through supervising and consulting activities, but from a much closer position to the front line of nuclear plants, and will also be involved more directly with the decision-making process on nuclear safety.

We will push ahead with nuclear safety innovation, with the goal of creating a safety culture unparalleled to the others while enhancing safety levels day after day and never forgetting the accident at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.
