Fukushima Daiichi NPS Prompt Report 2015

Meeting is an important milestone in restoring public trust and confidence in the future of nuclear energy and the safety of Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Station

The International Atomic Energy Agency is holding preparatory meetings this week to plan for full safety review this summer at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Station.

The facility is the world's largest nuclear power generating plant. TEPCO's application to restart the plant which was safely shut down after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Accident, is currently pending with Japan's regulatory authorities.

Dr. Dale Klein, former chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, who now chairs TEPCO's Nuclear Reform Monitoring Committee, said the review would be a welcome step. "This is an important element toward eventual restart of the facility, and it will give the global nuclear community an opportunity to review the extensive improvements TEPCO has made and is continuing to make as it embraces the safety culture our committee has emphasized."

The IAEA review will include equipment and facilities as well as employees' activities and skills. It will also include the evaluation of organization, communications, decision making, procurement, accident management, protection from radiation doses and safety system engineering.

The review is expected to take place from June 29 through July 13. The review will be led by Mr. Peter Tarren from Operational Safety Section of IAEA.

TEPCO plans to make the results of the IAEA review available to the public to demonstrate their commitment to transparency.
