Fukushima Daiichi NPS Prompt Report 2014

FUKUSHIMA, July 10, 2014- As Typhoon Neoguri heads east, the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station is fully prepared, the Tokyo Electric Power Company said today.

Even before the powerful typhoon struck Okinawa earlier this week and turned east toward Honshu, extensive preparations had been made at Fukushima Daiichi to ensure the facility would withstand any major storm, the company said.

The company explained that the reactor buildings themselves are strong enough to withstand the typhoon rains and winds. Most storm preparations underway now involve securing equipment, exposed pipes, and strengthening smaller or temporary structures that have been erected as part of the ongoing decontamination and decommissioning work.

Site superintendent Akira Ono reported: "The Fukushima Daiichi site is now prepared for the typhoon. Our workers have patrolled the site, taking a variety of precautions including securing pipes and cranes. To ensure that excess rainwater doesn't become contaminated or affect the environment, we have taken various measures to protect the tanks, including the construction of high dams that would contain any leakage."

While the typhoon is not expected to directly strike the Fukushima Daiichi site, outdoor decommissioning work will be suspended if wind and rain becomes heavy, the company noted. It added that many safety precautions had been taken before the typhoon season began, as a matter of routine.

In October 2013, Fukushima successfully withstood a brush with Typhoon Wipha, which was referred to at the time as a "once-in-a-decade" typhoon. Similar preparations were successful, and facilities kept intact.
