Press Release (May 16, 2014)Report Regarding the Electricity Supply-Demand Outlook for the Summer of FY2014

We greatly appreciate your understanding and cooperation in saving electricity after the Tohoku-Chihou-Taiheiyou-Oki Earthquake. Today, we have announced the power supply and demand outlook for the summer of FY2014.

With the effects of electricity saving taken into account, the electricity demand in July and August, in which high demand is expected, is estimated to reach 51.6 GW (assuming normal summer temperatures) or 53.2 GW (assuming high temperatures similar to the hot summer in 2010).
With regard to supply, the power supply capacity is estimated to be 55.82 GW in July and 56.12 GW in August, as a result of the steady promotion of new power sources such as the introduction of combined cycle systems at Chiba Thermal Power Station Group 3 (Rated power after combined cycle applied: 500 MW x 3 units, fuel: LNG) and Kashima Thermal Power Station Group 7 (Rated power after combined cycle applied: 420 MW x 3 units, fuel: city gas), and the commencement of operation of Kazunogawa Hydroelectric Power Station Unit 4 (Rated power: 400MW, Pumped-storage hydroelectric system). Thus, we can ensure the abovementioned supply capacity in July and August even if requests are made for power interchange to western Japan (to Kansai Electric Power Co., and Kyushu Electric Power Co.).
Based on this estimate, reserve power of 2.62 GW and a reserve margin of 4.9% will be secured in July, which will ensure a stable power supply, even if this summer is as severely hot as that in FY2010.

At the "Meeting on power supply and demand" held by the government today, it was stated that "We request cooperation*1 in electricity saving on the basis that such electricity saving*2 which has been established can be reliably performed in a way that minimizes the impact on people's lives and on economic activity". We would like to ask our customers to continue their efforts to save electricity where it is feasible to do so.

We make every effort to ensure a stable power supply, making resolute progress in securing power supply capacity through the proper running/maintenance of power facilities.

*1 The times and periods for power saving requested by the Government:
Tuesday, July 1st, 2014 - Tuesday, September 30th, 2014, between 9:00 - 20:00 on weekdays, except for Wednesday, August 13th - Friday, August 15th.

*2 A power saving of 11.7% (proportional to the maximum power saving established in 2010) is indicated as a guideline.
