Fukushima Daiichi NPS Prompt Report 2013

Judging by the monitoring results of the seawater, there has been no impact on the waters of the ocean

On October 23, we conducted water sampling on a routine basis at a drainage channel in Fukushima Daiichi NPS. The measurement results for gross-β reading were high at observation points B-1 and B-2 in the drainage channel which are located near the tank area.
TEPCO considers that the most probable cause of the higher gross-β reading was radioactive materials, which had fallen onto the ground surface at the time of the accident two and a half years ago, around the ditch flowed into the drainage channel due to rainfall. Removal of accumulated water inside the drainage channel was started on October 22.

Monitoring results of the seawater, which was sampled near the exit of the drainage channel, were confirmed to be below the detection limit value. Judging by the monitoring results of the seawater, there has been no impact on the waters of the ocean.

The specific results are as follows.

· Total-β: 15,000 Bq/L (340 Bq/L in the sample taken on October 22)

· Total-β: 140,000 Bq/L (59,000 Bq/L in the sample taken on October 22)
