Fukushima Daiichi NPS Prompt Report 2013

Fukushima Daiichi NPS Prompt Report (Oct 10, 2013)Immediate release: A sampling result 1km Offshore Fukushima Daiichi

SMALL AMOUNT OF CESIUM 137 DETECTED IN SEAWATER 1 KM OFFSHORE FUKUSHIMA DAIICHI,
NO INCREASE IN RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL DENSITY OBSERVED AT OTHER MONITORING POINTS,
BELOW DETECTION LIMITS FOR THE SAMPLING RESULTS TODAY,
FAR BELOW REGULATION LIMITS,
NO EFFECTS TO HUMAN HEALTH

TOKYO Oct. 10, 2013. A small amount of radioactive material was detected at a monitoring point 1km offshore Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, TEPCO announced today. The level was far below the regulation limit, suggesting no risk to health. The result of the sampling taken today was below the detection limit.

The company started monitoring seawater at the area (1km east of the site's port entrance) from August 14, as part of the strengthening of seawater monitoring, since it had confirmed contamination at the seaside area of the site from around May this year. Cesium 137, one of the main nuclides which have been emitted by the nuclear accident, is monitored at points in the ocean around the site every day. Very low levels of the nuclide are still being detected around the site.

At the point in question, where monitoring results of Cesium 137 were below detection limits until the day before, 1.4Bq/L of Cesium 137 was detected in water sampled on October 8, slightly exceeding the detection limit of 0.72Bq/L. The level is far below the regulation limit of 90Bq/L. It is also far below the drinkable limit of 10Bq/L, issued by the World Health Organization in its Guidelines for Drinking Water Quality. Again, the result of the sampling taken today was below the detection limit of 0.50Bq/L.

No fluctuation has been observed at the other monitoring points around the site.

TEPCO has stated that it will continue monitoring at the point in question. The monitoring results are promptly reported to the regulators and announced on TEPCO's homepage every day. Please refer to the below for the monitoring results.
