Fukushima Daiichi NPS Prompt Report 2013

Fukushima Daiichi NPS Prompt Report (Sep 04, 2013)Tritium Density Result of Water Quality Survey inside the Port of Fukushima Daiichi NPS (Follow-up Information 48)

This is follow-up information on the latest situation concerning the detection of high densities of Tritium and Strontium in the observation hole located on the east of the Units 1-4 Turbine Buildings.

We would like to announce cesium and all-β density measurement results on water in the groundwater observation hole No.1-9 located on the east of the Units 1-4 Turbine Buildings, sampled for the first time on September 3, as we obtained the results.

<Measurement results on the groundwater observation hole No.1-9: Sampled on September 3>
· Cesium-134: 170Bq/L
· Cesium-137: 380Bq/L
· All-β: 470Bq/L

As a result of the measurement, it was found that the cesium-134 and cesium-137 densities in the groundwater observation hole No.1-9 were about 7 to 10 times higher than those in seawater inside the water intake channel while the all-β density in this hole was at about the same level as that in the seawater.

We will monitor water in the above observation location by continuously sampling and analyzing the water.

Further, since the sampled water was turbid, the γ nuclides were measured again after the water was filtered. As a result, the cesium-134 and cesium-137 densities both decreased to 1/3 of the values before the filtering.

We are continuing to tackle this problem in such manners as to intensely bring forward implementation of contamination prevention measures such as foundation improvement work to the bank protection, and comprehensively intensify the monitoring by using the results of additional boring to drill additional locations, and the analyses results on seawater at such locations as the port interior and the water outlets.
