Press Release (Apr 26, 2013)Power Supply and Demand Outlook for the Summer of 2013

We greatly appreciate your understanding and cooperation in saving electricity after the Tohoku-Chihou-Taiheiyou-Oki Earthquake. We announce the power supply and demand outlook for the summer of 2013 as follows.

With the effectiveness of electricity saving, etc. taken into account, the power demand in July and August (time period in which high demand is expected) is estimated to be 52.8GW (assuming regular summer temperature) to 54.5GW (assuming an extremely hot summer as in 2010).

On the other hand, the power supply capacity is estimated to be 59.33GW in July and 58.13GW as a result of the development of new power supply facilities such as Unit 6 at Hirono Thermal Power Station (output: 600MW, fuel: coal) and Unit 2 at Hitachinaka Thermal Power Station (output: 1GW, fuel: coal). Based on the estimate above, 3.63GW of reserved power is estimated to be secured with a reserve margin of 6.7% in August even in the case of an extremely hot summer as in 2010.

At the "Meeting on power supply and demand" held by the government today, it was stated that "electricity saving is requested in a way which has the minimum impact on people's lives economic activities, etc.*1 The electricity saving value set for each area by the government*2 is provided as a guide for electricity saving". We would like to request our customers to continue reasonable effort in saving electricity.

We will continue our utmost efforts in achieving stable electricity supply through safe operation and maintenance of electric power facilities.

*1 Period of electricity saving requested by the government
