This is follow-up information regarding the water leak from the underground reservoirs at Fukushima Daiichi NPS.
In order to prevent the water leaked into the leakage detection holes of the underground reservoirs No.1 and No.2 at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station from leaking into the ground in the surrounding area, temporary pumps were being installed to pump up the leaked water in the leakage detection holes and return it to the underground reservoirs of concern.
Today (April 10), as the installation of temporary pumps has been completed, the pumps will be started to return the leaked water in the leakage detection holes into the underground reservoirs as soon as preparation is complete. This work will be performed until the transfer of the contaminated water stored in the underground reservoirs No.1 and No.2 to a different tank installed above ground is completed.
Also, since decontaminated water of a comparatively high concentration has been found in the leakage detection hole (in the northeast side) of the underground reservoir No.2, the soil covering the penetration, impermeable sheet, gravels, etc. will be removed once the preparation is complete.
In addition, boring investigation (the ground around the underground reservoirs and in the sea side will be drilled to collect water contained in the soil for radioactivity density analysis) will be performed as soon as preparation is complete for the purpose of confirming the contamination condition near the underground reservoirs and contamination expansion into the area in the sea side.
The information mentioned above will be explained at the previously announced press conference by our President (to be held at J-Village at 3:30 PM) and the press conference at the Head Office (to be held in the meeting room on the third floor of our Head Office from 4:30 PM). Documents will be distributed to the press club covering the Fukushima Prefectural government at 3:30 PM (planned).
