Due to the Tohoku-Chihou-Taiheiyou-Oki Earthquake which occurred on March
11, 2011, TEPCO's facilities including our nuclear power stations have been
severely damaged. We deeply apologize for the anxiety and inconvenience
caused.
With regard to the accident at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, on
April 17, we have compiled the roadmap towards restoration from the
accident and then we updated the progress status of roadmap considering the
current situation, on July 19. Accomplishment of the Step1 target
"Radiation dose is in steady decline" has been confirmed.
By bringing the reactors and spent fuel pools to a stable cooling condition
and mitigating the release of radioactive materials, we will make every
effort to enable evacuees to return to their homes and for all citizens to
be able to secure a sound life.
Below is the status of TEPCO's major facilities.
*Updates from previous press release are underlined.
[Nuclear Power Station]
Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station:
Units 1 to 3: shutdown due to the earthquake
(Units 4 to 6: outage due to regular inspections)
- Since SPT waste liquid pump and SPT receiving water transfer pump
stopped due to power lost of water glass of SPT tank, an alarm
showed low level of water at waste RO supply tank at 1:50 am on August
9 and water desalinations automatically stopped. At 6:57 am, water
glass of SPT tank recovered. At 9:35 am on the same day, water
desalinations restated as the water level at waste RO supply tank
recovered.
- At 10:00 am on August 9, we resumed transferring low-level accumulated
water to Mega Float which had been transferred from turbine building of
Unit 6 to temporary tank. At 10:12 am the transfer was paused due to
leakage from the transferring hose. At 1:35 pm on the same day, we
restared the transfer after replacing the hose.
- At 11:00 am on August 9, we restarted transferring accumulated water
from the underground level of reactor building of Unit 6 to a temporary
tank.
- At 9:27 am on August 9, we conducted plumbing between temporary pump
and residual heat removal system pump (A) to enforce the connection
method. We stopped the power source of residual heat removal system
pump (B) during this work. Even though cooling of a reactor and a spent
fuel pool were temporarily suspended, there are no safety issues
regarding this. At 2:01 pm, we restarted cooling a reactor and a spent
fuel pool.
- At 9:30 am on August 7, at cooperative firm rest area inside the site,
a cooperative firm worker who was managing access control expressed
dull feeling in the right knee and he was sent to Iwaki Kyoritsu
Hospital by an ambulance. However, the cause was unknown. As a result
of medical reexamination at Chiba Social Insurance Hospital, he was
diagnosed as "Traumatic right knee synovialis ecchymoma"
Fukushima Daini Nuclear Power Station:
Units 1 to 4: shutdown due to the earthquake
- At 9:31 am on August 9, among 7 monitoring posts installed in the site
boundary, we started regular inspection on No.2.
Kashiwazaki Kariwa Nuclear Power Station:
Units 5, 6, 7: normal operation
(Units 1 to 4: outage due to regular inspection)
[Thermal Power Station]
- Power supply has returned to normal and facilities damaged by the
earthquake are now being handled in a timely manner.
[Hydro Power Station]
- Power supply has returned to normal and facilities damaged by the
earthquake are now being handled in a timely manner.
[Impacts on Transmission Facilities]
- Power supply has returned to normal and facilities damaged by the
earthquake are now being handled in a timely manner.
[Perspective of Power Supply and Demand Balance in this Summer]
In regard to the supply side in this summer, taking in account of the
acceleration of restoration schedule for Hirono Thermal Power Station, more
purchase of privately generated power, and excluding the power supply from
60Hz areas which had been planned (due to the current difficult situation),
supply capacity outlook is amended to 57.2GW at the end of July, and 56.1GW
at the end of August.
Also, in order to support the supply and demand balance in the Tohoku area,
which suffered severe damage from the quake, we would like to supply
maximum of 1.4GW to Tohoku Electric Power Company by thoroughly
implementing both supply and demand countermeasures. The supply capacity in
this regard will be 55.8GW at the end of July, and 54.7GW at the end of
August.
Estimated peak demand of 55GW for this summer is 5GW lower than that of
last year. This incorporates the saving of electricity from "Outline of
Countermeasures for Power Supply and Demand During Summertime" and
restoration from decrease of production due to the quake.
As the occurrence of unplanned outage of aged thermal power stations or
sudden increase of demand due to unexpected high temperature during summer
may cause difficulties in maintaining stable demand supply balance, in
order to continue to avoid rolling blackouts, we will steadily maintain
supply capacity, and continue our efforts on reliable operation and
maintenance of power facilities.
We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause and appreciate for your
cooperation to save electricity.
