Regarding the "Solution for TEPCO's Plutonium in France" press released on April 23, 2013, some news media have been reporting that "TEPCO has signed contracts to transfer MOX fuels to foreign utilities" however, the actualities are as follows.
- TEPCO has swapped on bookkeeping basis its plutonium contained in MOX fuels (stored in France) with the equivalent quantity of plutonium owned by foreign utilities (stored in the UK) through the contract with Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) in the UK and AREVA NC in France.
- Therefore, it is plutonium instead of MOX fuels that is in subject of the transaction and the contract has not been made directly among TEPCO and foreign utilities.
