6 December, 2011, Tokyo: Today, TEPCO signed a Sale and Purchase Agreement
(SPA) with Ichthys LNG Pty Ltd for the supply of liquefied natural gas
(LNG) from the Ichthys LNG Project located in Australia.
The contract period of the SPA is 15 years commencing from 2017 and TEPCO
will purchase approximately 1.05 million tonnes of LNG per annum (for
plateau year).
The Ichthys LNG Project is located at Darwin in Northern Territory,
Australia and will liquefy natural gas produced from gas fields
approximately 890 km off shore of the liquefaction plant. The project will
initially comprise two liquefaction trains with a total capacity of
approximately 8.4 million tonnes per annum, with anticipated start up in
2016.
TEPCO recognized that materialization of this project will contribute to
enhance the stable supply of LNG to Japan and formed the consortium with
other 4 buyers (Tokyo Gas Co.,Ltd., The Kansai Electric Power Co.,Inc.,
Osaka Gas Co.,Ltd., Kyushu Electric Power Co.,Inc) and had negotiated to
conclude the SPA.
The Ichthys LNG Project is the 13th project from which TEPCO has
contracted to purchase LNG on a long-term basis. TEPCO believes that the
sale and purchase of LNG from the Ichthys LNG Project will increase the
security of its LNG supply, as it is a purchase from a robust and
promising greenfield project.
The conclusion of the SPA marks a further step in the implementation of
TEPCO's policy of pursuing stable and economical procurement of fuels in
order to maintain secure supplies of energy.
