Taking into consideration the accident at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power
Station due to the impact of tsunami after Tohoku - Pacific Ocean Earthquake
on March 11th 2011, we have implemented emergency safety measures to prevent
reactor core and spent fuel damage, and to quickly restore cooling function,
as well as implement a water stoppage measure at Unit 1 reactor building.
Furthermore, in order to secure reliability and safety against tsunamis, we
are in continuous discussion on the construction of tide barriers of Units
1 to 4, and tide embankment etc in front of the power station.
Today, we announce that we have put together a basic design of tide barriers
and tide prevention plates to be implemented at Units 1 to 4, which are
designed to prevent building from flooding by tsunamis.
Based on the basic design of tide barriers and tide prevention plates put
together this time, we will proceed with making detailed designs, as well
as explaining this to the government and Niigata Prefecture Technical
Committee.
We will continuously work on measures to further secure the reliability and
safety of tide embankment etc.
