Kawasaki City
The Tokyo Electric Power Company, Inc.
Kawasaki City (Mayor Takao Abe) and the Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc. (TEPCO President
Masataka Shimizu) today signed a basic agreement that provides for the implementation,
including construction details and the operation period, of a mega solar project in the
Ukishima and Ohgishima districts in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa. The two parties agreed on
October 20, 2008, to jointly carry out the project aimed at constructing solar power
plants with a total output of about 20,000 kW, and have been continuing discussion.
This basic agreement mainly stipulates the following.
· The project will be implemented jointly by Kawasaki City and TEPCO.
· Kawasaki City will publicize solar power generation through the project, as well as
provide part of the land to build solar power plants.
· TEPCO will undertake the construction and operation of solar power plants.
· The project will run for a period of 18 years from the date of start of the commercial
operation of the Ukishima Solar Power Plant.
With a total output of approximately 20,000 kW, the planned solar power plants are
expected to produce about 21 million kWh annually, which is equivalent to the annual
electricity usage of about 5,900 households. The project is estimated to reduce carbon
dioxide emissions by 8,900 tons a year, which is equivalent to annual carbon dioxide
emissions from approximately 1,700 households.
Kawasaki City is taking anti-global warming measures under the "Carbon Challenge
Kawasaki Eco-Strategy." The city government is trying to play the leading role in
creating a low-carbon society, through activities such as installing solar power
systems in public facilities and subsidizing the installation of residential solar
power systems.
Using this project as a powerful driving force, Kawasaki City will further the efforts
to introduce, promote and demonstrate solar power generation and other renewable
energy sources.
TEPCO aims to increase the use of nonfossil energy sources as a means to create a
low-carbon society. With this goal in mind, TEPCO will continue to support the spread
of solar power generation through various activities and will strive to build mega
solar power plants, including those jointly planned with municipal governments.
