Start of Functional Tests for the Entire Plant of the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Station Unit No.6 after the Niigata-Chuetsu-Oki Earthquake
The Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc. (TEPCO) asked the restart of operation of the Unit No.6 
of the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Station to the Niigata prefecture, the Kashiwazaki 
city, and the Kariwa village on July 3, 2009.  Today, based on the safety agreement, TEPCO 
gained approval of restart of the unit No.6 from Niigata Governor Hirohiko Izumida, 
Kashiwazaki Mayor Hiroshi Aida and Kariwa Mayor Hiroo Shinada.  

In response to this approval, TEPCO will start a series of functional test for the whole plant 
10:00 p.m. today, and plans to restart the Unit No.6 by withdrawing control rods at 2:00 p.m. 
tomorrow.  

Through the test, TEPCO will confirm the soundness of the Unit No.6.  And sincerely acknowledging 
the request from the Governor and Mayors when receiving the approval, TEPCO will do our best to 
make safety the first priority.
Furthermore, as for the results of the functional test, we will continue to make efforts to 
disclose information and explain politely to the national and local governments and local 
residents.
