Nonconformances Found in the Inspection and Restoration Works Performed after the
  Niigata-Chuetsu-Oki Earthquake

Based on the "Public Announcement Regarding Nonconformance Found in the Inspection
and Restoration Works Performed after the Niigata-Chuetsu-Oki Earthquake", the Tokyo
Electric Power Company, Incorporated (TEPCO) provides this announcement containing
incidents information reported from January 8th to January 14th, 2009.

 ○ Incidents Information (relating to the Chuetsu-Oki Earthquake)
Incidents Information (relating to the Chuetsu-Oki Earthquake)
< Reports from January 8 to January 14, 2009 >
Reports from January 8 to January 14, 2009
○ Other Findings • Information on Nonconformances (those related to: the Chuetsu-Oki Earthquake; Grades As, A, B, C, D; and non-graded)
* Numbers were corrected to reflect nonconformance incidents that had been identified as not related to the Chuetsu-Oki Earthquake (7 cases) and that had been double-counted (1 case). • We sincerely acknowledge the instructions and requests from various institutions and will do our best to prevent recurrence of events by increasing the level of safety consciousness together with cooperating companies. We sincerely apologize for causing anxiety to local residents due to the fires that broke out at the turbine building of TEPCO's Kashiwazaki-Kariwa NPS Unit No.7 on November 22nd, 2008 and at the turbine building of Unit No.6 on December 8th, 2008. As for these two fires, we have reported the root cause analysis and recurrence prevention measures of each case to the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA) of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, and we are earnestly carrying out this recurrence prevention measures. We sincerely acknowledge the instructions and requests from various institutions and will do our best to prevent recurrence of events by increasing the level of safety consciousness together with cooperating companies. • The number 3 solid waste storage building that begun construction on April 2008 was completed on December 25th, 2008 and was designated as radiation protection area on January 13th, 2009. The construction of the number 3 building had been planned prior to the occurrence of the Niigata Chuetsu-Oki earthquake with the intention to expand the storage capacity of drums up to a total of 45,000 permitted by the regulatory agency at the time of the establishment permit of the Kashiwazaki Kariwa NPS. By the end of 2006, the number of drums had reached 21,700 or 70% of the total storage capacity of 30,000 of the existing storage buildings number 1 and 2. With the completion of building number 3, a total of 45,000 drums can now be stored at the site. Based on a study of storage method of drums that is resistant to seismic motion, we have decided to use rack-type storage containers in addition to box pallets currently used in the interim storage facility. We plan to relocate currently stored drums and newly generated drums to box pallets and rack-type storage containers in the next 1 year.
