Press Release (Nov 12,2007)
Status of the unit 5 in-core inspections at Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Station
As for the unit 5, in order to conduct in-core inspections, we have
been removing fuel assemblies from the reactor core to the fuel
storage pool, which is scheduled from Nov. 3rd to Nov. 13th.
At 7:09 pm on Nov 11th, during the removal of the 705th one (located
on the periphery) of 764 fuel assemblies, the alarm sounded, which
indicated the refueling machine was highly loaded (Abnormal Load on
Main Hoist), and its automatic operation stopped.

We suspended the work immediately and inspected the refueling
machine, but no abnormality was found.

This alarm sounded when the fuel assembly was pulled out, so the fuel
assembly in question is located at the same position as before.
We will remove the rest of the fuel assemblies and investigate the
cause of this event.

We have confirmed that there has no damage to fuel assemblies, since
we have observed no significant change in the iodine concentration in
the water of the reactor.
