The Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), Inc. has signed a technical
consulting agreement with the South Texas Project Nuclear Operating
Company (STPNOC) regarding the construction and operation management
of Advanced Boiling Water Reactors (ABWR).
Recently, a worldwide movement towards construction of nuclear plants
has accelerated in reaction to the increase in crude oil price, to
secure a stable energy supply, and to prevent global warming. Amidst
this environment, NRG Energy, Inc. (NRG), one of the largest power
generators in the United States, is proceeding with a plan to build
two additional nuclear units (Units 3 & 4) at the South Texas Project
Electric Generating Station. NRG intends for this project to be the
first nuclear power plants built in the United States since 1979, and
has selected the ABWR technology for the first time in the United
States. NRG commissioned STPNOC to construct and operate the new units.
As announced in TEPCO's press release dated March 13, 2007, TEPCO has,
as a company that possesses expertise in constructing and operating
ABWRs, provided technical consulting services to help STPNOC with its
application for a combined construction and operating license (COL) to
the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).
On September 24, 2007, STPNOC submitted the COL application and requested
TEPCO for a continued technical support for the project.
Based on this Phase 2 technical consulting agreement, TEPCO will provide
technical support to materialize the project in areas such as construction
planning, operation management, and operator training.
Specific tasks are subject to further consultation with STPNOC.
TEPCO will seek further growth and development by utilizing our technical
expertise and knowledge in the overseas consulting and power generation
businesses.
