In light of the July 16, 2007, Niigata-Chuetsu-Oki Earthquake (magnitude 6.8,
distance from epicenter 16 km, focal distance 23 km), The Tokyo Electric Power
Company, Inc. (TEPCO) will appropriately reflect the knowledge obtained through
this earthquake in its evaluation of earthquake safety at the TEPCO Kashiwazaki-Kariwa
Nuclear Power Station.
As part of the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Station's earthquake-resistant
design, detailed surveys of both the land and sea were performed, including
maritime acoustic exploration. In light of the recent earthquake, TEPCO hereby
announces that it will carry out geological surveying by maritime acoustic
exploration in the sea adjacent to the power station, including the area in
which aftershocks of the Niigata-Chuetsu-Oki Earthquake occurred.
