The Tokyo Electric Power Company, Inc. ("TEPCO") announces today that a
TEPCO-participated consortium has begun the commercial operation of a
natural gas advanced combined cycle (ACC) power plant in the Phu My 2-2
project in Vietnam on February 4.
The consortium consists of Electricite de France (EDF), Sumitomo Corporation,
and TEPCO. The three companies won the project in the Vietnamese Government's
first international competitive bid for a BOT model, in which the private
sector builds and operates a project, and transfers it to the host country
when the contract expires.
The consortium signed the contract in September 2001 and set up a project
company, the Mekong Energy Company Ltd. ("MECO"). Construction began in
January 2003 at the coastal site, 50km southeast of Ho Chi Minh City and
located in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province.
The plant enjoys a high thermal efficiency of 51 percent approximately through
the use of ACC technology, of which TEPCO has had sufficient operational
experience. The plant also receives a stable supply of fuel from the domestic
Nam Con Son Gas Field under a contract with state-run Petro Vietnam.
Generated power will be sold exclusively to Electricity of Vietnam under
the power purchase agreement. The plant will be transferred to the Vietnamese
Government 20 years after the beginning of commercial operation.
Along with the activities in Vietnam, TEPCO is engaged in another thermal power
generation projects in Taiwan, Australia and the United Arab Emirates. We are
also taking part in Eurus Energy Holdings, which operates wind power generation
projects in the United States, Europe, and Japan. We continue to develop
overseas power generation projects actively for our further growth.
