Tokyo--- The Tokyo Electric Power Company(TEPCO) announced today that
TEPCO submitted to the Kanto Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry a
notice regarding the discontinuation of Unit 1 of Yokosuka Thermal
Power Station and Unit 4 of Yokohama Thermal Power Station, both
effective as of December 20, 2004.
The scope of retail electricity liberalization continues to expand.
Despite this and other adverse conditions within the electricity sector,
TEPCO, based on the prerequisites of providing a stable electricity
supply and guaranteeing energy security, has engaged in the formation
and operation of efficient facilities in its pursuit of overall managerial
efficiency. As part of its undertakings, TEPCO has decided to discontinue
operation of Unit 1 of Yokosuka Thermal Power Station and Unit 4 of
Yokohama Thermal Power Station, at which long-term planning has been
terminated due to the marked deterioration of facilities.
The two units have been in operation for over forty years. We would
like to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt appreciation to
the residents in the vicinity of the two plants, as well as to all those
concerned, for their immense understanding and cooperation. As ever, we
endeavor to engage in the construction and operation of reliable power
stations that are firmly rooted in local society.
