Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) received an order today from the Nuclear and
Industrial Safety Agency (NISA) to stop the operation of Fukushima Daiichi
Nuclear Power Station's Unit-1 reactor for a year because of the problem relating
to leak tests on the primary containment vessel at the reactor in 1991 and 1992.
TEPCO has humbly accepted the NISA order, and intends to take appropriate
measures in relation to it.
The requirement for a one-year suspension of the nuclear power reactor operation
is an extremely severe sanction. TEPCO will this evening start reducing the output
in order to halt the reactor, and will conduct another leak test on the primary
containment vessel as soon as possible. The result of the leak test will be made
public.
In addition, TEPCO will make inspection plans for its other nuclear power reactors
without delay, and will conduct these inspections in order to gain public support
from those in the vicinity of the nuclear power stations. At the same time, TEPCO
will make an effort to establish a clear picture of the situation through the
investigations by the Outside Investigation Team.
It is not acceptable that TEPCO was guilty of wrongdoing at the final stage of the
periodic inspection by the government inspectors. In view of the gravity of this,
TEPCO is absolutely committed to preventing any recurrence of such an error.
TEPCO would like to express its sincere apologies both to those in the vicinity of
its nuclear power stations and to all members of society.
