Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc.
Tokyo Electric Power Company recently published The Earth, People & Energy -
TEPCO Environmental Action Report 2002. This is the 11th issue of the report which has
been published yearly since 1992 as a medium of disclosing information on our
environmental activities.
Similar to the 2001 edition, the latest issue of the report focuses on "sustainable
development" as the main theme and discusses our commitments and achievements in
three aspects of our corporate mission - environmental protection, economic efficiency and
social responsibility. In order to further enhance its contents as a "sustainability report,"
we newly added an "Integrated" section to its 2002 issue to describe our measures and
activities for simultaneous achievement of these three elements. The following are major
topics discussed in the Integrated section:
· Improvement of equipment efficiency, specifically improvements in the capacity
utilization rate of nuclear power stations and in the thermal efficiency of thermal
power stations, to simultaneously achieve reductions of CO2 emissions and fuel
costs
· Environmental accounting to calculate eco-efficiency ratio which contrasts
environmental impacts with economic values
· Improvement of energy efficiency in society as a whole mainly by activities to build a
more energy-efficient society in cooperation with customers and all other members
of the community
The report contains another new section that discusses the basic environmental
philosophy and environmental action guidelines of the TEPCO Group, comprising 21 major
member companies as well as TEPCO itself, measures to upgrade environmental
management in the group as a whole, and examples of the group companies'
commitments to environmental protection.
The following section summarizes notable topics of the 2002 edition.
