Kawasaki City (Takao Abe, Mayor) and Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) (Naomi Hirose, President) jointly constructed solar power stations at Ukishima and Ohgishima (Total output: 20 MW). Today is the first anniversary of Ukishima Solar Power Station (Maximum output: 7MW) which commenced operation on August 10, 2011.
Since its operational commencement, Ukishima Solar Power Station has been generating power steadily and the annual total of generated power* has reached approx. 9,450MWh (equivalent to the annual total power consumption of approx. 2,600 regular households) which is 1.3 times more than initially estimated. The amount of CO2 emission reduction has turned out to be approx. 4,400 tons (equivalent to the annual total CO2 emission of approx. 910 regular households).
At the same timing as the operational commencement of Ukishima Solar Power Station, "Kawasaki Eco Gurashi Miraikan", a PR/learning facility operated by Kawasaki City where visitors can learn about global warming, renewable energy, etc. was opened on August 6, 2011. As of the end of July 2012, the number of visitors to the facility has reached 21,850 people (local elementary school students, visitors from overseas, administrators from all over Japan who are considering to go into the mega solar business, etc.), which is beyond the initial estimate. The popularity of the facility shows a high level of social interest in the renewable energy.
Kawasaki City will continue to share information on its accumulated environmental technologies domestically and internationally and promote the understanding of the importance of renewable energy and electricity saving.
TEPCO will continue efforts in achieving stable power supply while ensuring the safe operation of Ukishima and Ohgishima Solar Power Stations.

* Generated power: Power consumption by control equipment, power conditioner air-conditioning equipment, etc. and the power loss at cables in the power station are subtracted from the actual amount of generated power.
